Freedom Blogger Yaoni Sánchez

225px-YoaniSanchezwithcoffeecupYoani Sánchez, a Cuban blogger named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2008, was recently kidnapped from a Havana street and assaulted by state security. Twenty minutes later, Sánchez and her friend were “violently thrown on the street” near the location of the kidnapping.

Sánchez, who often blogs about daily life in modern Cuba, was on her way to a “peaceful performance-march” with a friend at the time of the assault.

It’s sad, but such scare-tactics are still commonplace in those parts of the world that still reject freedom of the press. Let’s be grateful that, as of yet, most first-world countries still respect freedom of speech and place little restriction on what can be said on the Internet. Communication is a human right and is worth protecting.
