State-controlled art

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carly J Hallman @ 7:11 pm

I’ve long been interested in propaganda art, and, accordingly, I found this article by Patrick Courrielche an interesting read.

Of course, state-funded art projects bring to mind, in the most extreme cases, images of Chairman Mao’s gleaming forehead and Hitler’s fancy Nazi films, but I wonder how the concept of government art will translate in an otherwise capitalist country– Will only the fine arts (ie arts largely funded by the NEA rather than private investment) be affected, while mass entertainment stays the same? Is that possible? Or will the Obama agenda eventually rub off on the larger entertainment world anyway? Will this mean a remake of Patch Adams in which Robin Williams plays a humorous doctor practicing silly medicine in a national health care system and against the wishes of rude DMV-esque nurses? Will Lady GaGa write a song about how awesome it is to make so much money, honey that she can pay millions a year to the government in taxes? And, perhaps most pressing of all, will Mrs. Obama found a Madame Michelle’s Ballet Academy?
